BICYCLE BORED APE NFT PLAYING CARDS
Famous playing cards Brand "Bicycle" will release Bored Ape NFT Playing Cards
The brand will sell decks of playing cards based on the Ape, and plan to release further decks in collaboration with Bored Ape owners in the future.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club has attracted a wide range of investors, from sport stars to celebrities (Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Eminem, Neymar Jr, Steph Curry to name a few).
Some use the NFT artwork as a status symbol, while others create and sell their own products based on the IP.
Bicycle Playing Cards, the long-running physical playing card brand established in the 1885, now under parent company Cartamundi, announced today that it purchased a Bored Ape NFT, the #1227, in June for over 103 ETH ($187,000 in the moment of the purchase), and that it plans to create and sell physical playing cards using the artwork.
Masha Ievseieva, Cartamundi Global VP of Brand Commercialization, said that Bicycle specifically chose an Ape with a joker playing card in a helmet, one of just 2% of the 10,000 total Ethereum NFTs that have that attribute. It also has a futuristic-looking visor, which she said makes the character look like a “metaverse explorer,” nodding towards the brand’s ongoing ambitions in the Web3 space.
It is worth mentioning that BAYC owners automatically have the rights to use their own NFT for commercial purposes, without any official licensing agreement with Yuga Labs, creator of BAYC.
Bicycle plans to release a physical deck of playing cards next year featuring its Bored Ape artwork not only on the packaging, but on the individual cards as well. Ievseieva said that it’s planned to be released widely to the public, but that the brand may also release exclusive decks for holders as well.
Furthermore, Bicycle intends to engage with the community of Bored Ape holders in the weeks ahead and seek potential collaborators, whose owned Apes could also be used for additional decks of cards down the line.
Bycicle stepped into Web3 late last year, releasing their own collection of NFTs, in which the artists tried to imagine how playing cards will be in the future. Holders received a limited edition physical deck of cards too.
About this collection, Stefaan Merckx, the CEO of Bicycle said:
"At Bicycle, we’re a heritage brand that has been at the forefront of playing cards for over 135 years and this NFT launch marks a special moment in our history where we’re bridging the gap between tradition and innovation. Looking ahead, we’ll continue to reach new consumers and generations, while also staying true to our history."
